I’m organizing a mosaic workshop in Venice Lido, next summer!
We are making mosaic in a wonderful hotel close to the beach, at 10 minutes by boat from Saint Mark Square, but also enjoying the magic atmosphere of Venice and its lagoon!

MOSAIC WORKSHOP IN VENICE
- 5 January 2009
- The year 2008 ended in an unexpected way: I had a car accident in South Africa, and I came back home with a plaster on my right foot... but happy to be alive! I am keeping the plaster until January 13th, then I hope to come back to work... and also to come back to South Africa as soon as possible! I miss my students and my friends there! Happy new year, happy mosaics to everybody!
Happy 2009!!!!

- Here I am, after a very busy summer, June in California, July and August working at the Spilimbergo mosaic School and making mosaic in my workshop. In two days I’m flying to Cape Town, for a two months mosaic project... I’ll keep you updated, it’s going to be very interesting!
Ready to fly to South Africa

- I’m back from one week in Miami, where I enjoyed the 7th Congress of SAMA, gaving classes and a presentation of my mosaics and the Spilimbergo Mosaic School: I have no words to say how great it was!!! Such an experience! I come back home full of new friends, new inspiration for my mosaics... They were 4 days full of things to do: share experiences, listen to other presentation, meet new and old friends, enjoy all the thing offered by the SAMA! Super extra compliments for the great organization, everything was terrific!! Thank you to everybody indeed! And now I am a member of SAMA! I do not want to miss the next Congress, the next year in San Diego!
Back from Miami!

- Here I am, back from two weeks in South Africa! Have a look at www.spier.co.za. Spier’s boss, Dick Hentoven, and his assistent Jeanetta, are incredible guests and brillant minds, planning to open a mosaic workshop for artists living in the township close to Cape Town. Celina Ellen (students at the Spilimbergo Mosaic School for a few months now) and I were invited to go there and have a look about this project. We are going to teach mosaic and work with our students on a big commission. We are excited to go back and start as soon as possible!

I had a great time in Spain, on the "Camino de Santiago", a walk of about 20 Km every day for 20 days (I "only" walked half of the Camino, 370 Km, so I keep the second part of the trip for the next holiday!)... very inspiring: wonderful nature, people, culture, spirituality... all that is necessary to grow up and get new inspiration for nicer mosaic... now it’s time to come back to work, and show some of the mosaics that I made before leaving (soon the ones I’m doing right now!):

H.Matisse: Still life
I love Gaudì... and fortunately I always have somebody asking for a shower on "trencadis":

I also had a great time in California, helping my friend Pippa Murray on a big commission... my favorite colleague was Ithaka, Pippa’s daughter:

Ithaka and me
In June I was in California again, giving kids and adult classes at the CCA:

...more soon, thank you for visiting my site!
Back from Spain...

I have been working a lot in the last months, making mosaics as well as teaching mosaic in Italy and abroad.
The most important mosaic that I made is placed now on the front of the Church of S. Giuseppe in Potenza, South Italy. It’s a 10 sqm mosaic represents S.Giuseppe.

See the pics

Here I am, finally updating my site...

Participating in an exhibition or a competition is a good "excuse" for me to create my own mosaics which are often more personal and unconventional than the ones I do for commissions. My works currently on exhibit at Villa Galvani, located in the oldest park in Pordenone, is just such an example my "non-conforming" side!
In my recent mosaics I continue to work on the concept of the "lightness" of mosaic and on layering so that the mosaics can reach unexpected depths. Is that possible with mosaic?! Well, I think so!

Here it is-my "Self-portrait" in which you have a first layer of transparent "tessere"’ covered by silicone, glued over my enlarged picture -2nd layer-. The transparent tessere follow of course the traditional rules of mosaics "andamenti". Instead of being colored themselves, they let you see the color behind them or my picture! At this point you have a third, deeper layer. If you switch on a light behind the mosaic, you can read the enigmatic question "But who is behind the mask?" written upside down behind the mosaic. But if you switch off the light the question disappears just like the doubts and fears hidden behind the image that we present to the world of ourselves.
The pictures hung on transparent wires are taken from my recent journey in Japan. That’s the way I see Japan—a charming and mysterious country. Here again I use transparent "tessere" covered with silicone and glued over my pictures. Again, the "tessere" strictly follow the traditional rules of mosaic’s andamenti but sometimes I use a bigger piece where I want to highlight a special detail.

Also on exhibit is my "100% MOSAIC" foulard where the "tessere" are trapped in the silicone making the mosaic more transparent and flexible.
This way to doing mosaic is quite unconventional, at least for who studied at the mosaic school in Spilimbergo. This method pushes mosaic techniques to its limit and reflects my wish to play with mosaic and to be ironic with it!
